therion

Therion is, without doubt, one of the most innovate and diverse bands there is. Their music has all the basic elements of metal (which, I assume, is highly influenced by heavy as well as death metal), yet they've incorporated a real choir into their songs. This makes Therion's music a quite unique experience, without being the only important aspect of their work.

Truth is, Christofer Johnson (the mind behind Therion's music), has done a tremendous job creating amazing guitar riffs and complex, yet wonderful, keyboard sections, as well as writing most of those mysterious and enigmatic lyrics, inspired (from what I know) on ancient cults (visit this page for more information).

After a rather slow start, Therion's music evolved into this heavy, yet symphonic metal with their releases Lepaca Kliffoth and, specially, their masterpiece Theli, in which the powerful voices of the North German Radio Choir and the Siren Choir give even more strength to each song. An eventual growl (more like a screaming voice...) and a few more metal-style vocals are also present. And it all adds on to that wonderful music, which is rather fast most of the time, but it also has it's slow moments ('the Siren of the Woods', for example).

In their latest album, Vovin, Therion adopts a more orchestral sound by incorporing a string ensemble into their music (which is just beautiful), and eliminating all growling vocals. This causes the music to be even more symphonic, and quite doomier, yet the songs are still usually fast. It is rather different to their previous work, but it is still a marvellous album that I also recommend.
