It is perfectly known that this Dutch band's image and music concept, as well as all media attention spins around their vocalist Anneke Van Giersbergen. "And why not?", I would dare say, that girl has the greatest voice I've ever heard from a metal band. She has an amazing technique and a beautiful way to express the feelings contained in her lyrics (which, I must point out, do sometimes sound trite).
But in spite all that, the musicians from The Gathering are definitely doing a good job creating the right scenario for those great vocals. The guitars, keyboards and drums specially, are nicely written and well performed, yet remaining as background most of the time.
But please don't get me wrong. The final result after the combination of vocals and music is just marvellous. It all fits perfectly in the nicest way, and their songs are each filled with a personality of its own. Mandylion, Nightime Birds and How to Measure a Planet are absolutely great albums that I highly recommend.
