Moonspelll is yet another band that has changed a lot since it's black metal beginnings. And although they've decided to produce a much more 'gothier' sound in their last album, SIN pecado, what has definitely been their greatest music comes from their previous releases Irreligious and, specially, Wolfheart.
Those two albums are just fantastic, so unique and different of any other kind of metal. I guess it has a little black, a little doom, a little goth... and of course, a lot of Portuguese folk traditions, reflected in the music as well as in the lyrics. The vocals go from a very nice growling to some really cool deep, low vocals (that have been reproduced by a lot other bands since), with some harsh accent spoken dialogs (that are just great), a more screamy kind of growl and some magnificent female vocals to complement it all. The guitar sound is very good and the keyboard work is really amazing.
I had the privilege of seeing them play live and I wasn't disapointed at all (well, they could have played a lot more songs from Wolfheart and less from SIN pecado, but they were indeed promoting the new album so...). Moonspell is just an absolutely great band that I highly recommend. Songs like 'of dream and drama', 'herr spiegelmann', 'opium', 'vampiria', 'an erotic alchemy', 'alma mater' (I could go on an on...), are just hymns. Hear them and try to prove me wrong.
