héroes del silencio

I have to admit that I don't really love music that has spanish lyrics, although it is my native language. Yet with Héroes del Silencio I make an exception. This great spanish band (that, unfortunately, has been separated for a while) is completely different to all other latin rock bands; they have always had that doomy touch in their music, although they have changed their style several times.

At first, they played some kind of pop-rock, with a big emphasis in clean guitar riffs and sad melodies (El mar no cesa and Senderos de traición). Then they evolved into a more experimental music, with notorious oriental influences, heavier guitars and a much more powerful sound (as in the album El espíritu del vino). Finally, they settled for a heavy rock sound (Avalancha), conserving that guitar riff protagonism that has always been characteristic of their music.

Obviously one of the aspects of Héroes' music that attracts the attention of a big part of its audience are Enrique Bunbury's deep, emotive clean vocals, as well as his amazing lyrics, that reject all common and obvious aspects of the every day life, which seem to be the subject of most spanish lyrics I've heard. His, are true poems of enigmatic beauty that can be difficult to decipher, yet they're easy to comprehend when adopted as part of each one's own story and provided with a personal meaning.

I recommend:
  • The Héroes del Silencio Sanctuary: this pages are in spanish, but they're the best related to the band; there are tons of pictures, weird audio samples, news, info and all kinds of downloads.
