devil doll

Devil Doll's music is, as defined on all their releases, 'a concept by Mr. Doctor', a truly mysterious man that avoids all kind of media attention and hasn't even given any interviews for a big while now. But this isn't so hard to understand if we are aware that, in the beginning, none of his marvellous creations were destinated to be released as record albums and, most probably, available to a much bigger audience.

This may be why Mr. Doctor himself burned a bunch of his own CDs when they first were released, as well as the reason why his music is as emotional and expresive as it is hard to describe. But I might as well give it a try:

Sometimes, Mr. Doctor's weird, high pitch elf-like voice is only accompanied by a sorrowful and soft piano melody, or by a really nice Italian accordion, or by a complex and beautiful violin melody; in this slow piano moments, he can sound surrounded by despair, disappointment, sadness or fear. Then, the music would burst with anger, rage or even paranoia; a choir, electric guitars, heavy percussions. Sometimes almost like a horror movie's soundtrack. It can also be highly melodic, and some other times change into a slow, mysterious waltz, again filled with grief, or maybe even embellished with just a little distant hope...

By this description you may have already figured out one of his songs cannot last less than 20 minutes or so, and they can sometimes be even an hour long. But, you must believe me, it is all worth hearing to the last minute. And if you don't, you can still think about the fact that this great band's record company, Hurdy Gurdy Records, was exclusively created to release its albums, and it has been a successful business ever since...
